A Message from the Pastor…………………….

In the last few Gospels up to today, we have been sent on mission (“like sheep among wolves”), urged to do practical charity on the way (the Good Samaritan), reminded that our charity is rooted in contemplative love for Jesus (Martha and Mary), and this week, directed to what is even beneath our prayer: deep abiding belief in God’s care for us. So here we have a primer, a base of instruction for joyful, secure living in this world. It all echoes what I said a few weeks ago that could be seen as the overall theme of these weeks, and weeks ahead, of the Gospel:—-THERE’S ALWAYS MORE.

I was as surprised as you at the news that Deacon Carl is reassigned. When I first heard of the possi- bility, I offered a dialogue to see about him remaining here. But the die was cast, and he’s already done with his service here (these things happen quicker for deacons than for priests). Deacon Carl has become present and very generous in many parish ministries: Baptism instruction, preaching, and a favorite of his, RCIA for adults coming into our church. With Deacon Bill and others, we will fill these ministries. As abruptly as this happened, we’d like to find a time to have him back for a farewell reception; what’s ahead for us in large gatherings is uncertain again. In the meantime I encourage you to write a note of thanks and good wishes, a gift if you want, and send it to the Parish Office for us to forward to him.

I have to leave Monday for a family wedding, and as before I’ll drive out east and see a few sights and be back in town next week Wednesday August 3rd. I promise I’ll be right back!
